Miguel Montoya

The current CRILA director, Miguel Montoya, is a local Honduran businessman who works with the local community, local Honduran businesses, and supporting US organizations to ensure that CRILA remains viable in its current form and also undertakes new opportunities for expansion of existing services including development of prosthetic and orthotic capability and construction of a new facility.

 

Background:

In 1998, research conducted by University Center of the Atlantic Coast Regional (CURLA- UNAH ) nursing department faculty and national and international consultants as well as concerned community members showed a significant local population with physical disabilities and special needs. [CURLA is Centro Universitario Regional del Litoral Atlantico, which is a public universityin La Ceiba run by the larger Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras (UNAH)] Committed members of the community formed a governing board to investigate implementation of a public rehabilitation center. Aided by strong support from the community and the Municipality of La Ceiba,the Centro de Rehabilitacion Integral del Litoral Atlantico (CRILA) opened in July 2005.

Geography served:

La Ceiba City, Honduras, CA and the surrounding mountainous area and northern coast extending eastward including the departments of Colon and Gracias a Dios. La Ceiba is the capital of the Department of Atlántida and the third largest city in Honduras; pop. 170,000. Regional population served will be approximately 600,000 persons.

  • ODECO - An Afro-Honduran organization dedicated to raising racial awareness
  • AMBHLI (Association of Injured Deep Water Lobster Divers in the Mesquita)
  • CURE Honduras - An international medical nonprofit organization in San Pedro Sula which provides consultation for complex orthopedic patients.
  • Hackett Hemwall Foundation - A medical foundation based in Wisconsin, US which provides prolotherapy and sclerosing therapy during its annual March visit as well as rehabilitation training, supplies and equipment (please see how HHF supports CRILA on the HHF website)

 Local Sources of Income:

  • An annual CRILATHON
  • Patient donations
  • Donations from businesses and individuals in the community
  • Sale of CRILA Tee Shirts and Decals

Operational Controls:

  • Weekly accounting is accomplished by an accountant external to the business
  • A yearly audit is conducted by a professional auditing company in Tegucigalpa
